Why I’m Taking On a 12-Week Fitness Challenge (and It’s Not About Weight Loss)

Twelve weeks is a long time. Taking progress pictures and weighing yourself is a big deal. At least, it always was for me. As a young dancer, I lived under the constant pressure of appearance-based expectations. Those pressures led to self-harming behaviors that took years of deep work to unlearn. I hesitated when this challenge required progress photos—because for so long, my worth felt tied to what my body looked like.
And then it hit me: that’s exactly why I need to do this.
We can’t just avoid our triggers. We have to understand them, work through them, and rewrite the narrative on our own terms.
Why I’m Doing This Challenge
My son committed to a 12-week transformation at our gym, and I decided to join him—not for weight loss, but for accountability and mental resilience. I typically advocate against fitness challenges because they often push unhealthy weight-loss mindsets. Trendy influencer “quick fix” programs and “biggest loser” competitions? Not my jam.
But this time felt different. I wanted to show up for my son. And more importantly, I trust the gym owners at Legendary Fitness Gym in Hainesport—a hardworking, bull-shit-free environment that prioritizes strength over vanity, progress over perfection, and sustainability over extremes.
How This Aligns With My Work
For over 20 years, I’ve worked with children, especially young girls, and now I work in mental health and with NEDA (National Eating Disorders Association). My passion is helping people respect and love their bodies for what they can do, not just how they look. I’ve spent years unlearning toxic beauty standards and helping others do the same.
So, if I’m doing this challenge, I have to do it differently.
What This Challenge Means to Me
This isn’t about shrinking my body. I’m not chasing an appearance goal.
Instead, I’m using these 12 weeks to focus on:
✔️ How I move and what my body is capable of
✔️ How I fuel myself in a way that supports my energy
✔️ How I feel- mentally, emotionally, and physically
It’s about discipline, resilience, and mental strength- ensuring that this challenge benefits my mind and body in a sustainable way.
My Commitment Moving Forward
I am the happiest I have ever been- not because of how I look, but because of how I feel and the way I take care of my body over the long term.
This isn’t about competing with anyone. It’s about creating lasting strength... inside and out.
Let’s make this about more than just fitness. Let’s make it about showing up for ourselves.
